Cherry Hill
Community Center
The restoration of the Cherry Hill Community Center was completed in March 2011. Its inclusion in this project continues our focus on education and reminds us that the early history of education in the Lowcountry included racial segregation.
The original building, built in 1876 by former slaves for use as a church, was soon converted to a classroom and served that function for the local black community until 1956. Many local residents (including Flora Gethers, Minnie Gibbs, Rosa Owens, Vera Young, and Rev. Remus Harper Jr.) helped bring about the restoration of the building. Restoration fundraising began in late 2008 and the building was completed in March 2011.
